Fine art painting. A knight carries a toddler, facing a green meadow. His back is to the viewer, his face hidden, and we see the polished dark gray plate and rivets of his armour, and the lavish brocade of his red tunic, the neckline peeking out from the armour. The red-cheeked, curly-haired toddler looks back toward the viewer: face touching the knight's, a hand on the knight's shoulder, a contented look on the face. A green meadow lies beyond them, dotted with bushes, a path winding through the grass.

Fine art painting. In a bedroom, a tiny baby lies swaddled and asleep in a wooden, rocking cradle. Bending over the child is an angel robed in a luxurious copper robe; her hair is rich brown; her feathered wings are iridescent blue, teal, and copper. She holds a gold-trimmed casket in her hands like an gift, and gazes at the baby serenely, perhaps thoughtfully. Behind the child, next to its cradle, is its parents' four-poster bed: the bedcovers are a colourful geometric pattern; green curtains surround it. On the other side of the bed is a woman in a dark blue dress and a white headscarf, making some sort of toy with her fingers. She doesn't seem to notice the angel's presence.

Fine art painting. A corridor inside a church, seen through a gothic arch. Paintings, plaques, and statuary of Roman Catholic figures adorn the walls: the Virgin Mary, Jesus the child, various saints. Two archways are seen in this corridor, leading deeper into the shadowed interior, where a shadowy figure stands. To the right an unseen glow of light illuminates this corridor. A warm, soft, peaceful comfort permeates this view.
“Interior of a Church” (1859). Max Emanuel Ainmiller.

Photograph. The cell, showing two large and barred oriel windows set into the stone wall, with a desk and chair positioned against the wall between them. On the desk are two wrought-iron candleholders, and between them, a wooden sculpture of a crucifix, with Mary holding the dead Christ. Sunlight streams in from the two windows, but the desk is in shadows.

Photograph. A residential lane runs between stone houses with steps leading up to their doors, and through an ornamental stone arch, and beyond. The nearer staircase is barred by a low gate, but potted plants and flowers line the steps all the way to the landing and the doorway beyond. The sky beyond is clear and sunny, giving this idyllic lane a feeling of sunny peace and homely welcome.

Photograph. A white tablecloth strewn with gold confetti. Atop it stands a green glass lantern, dimly glowing, a tealight in a simple clear glass, and two large pillar candles on a filigree dish. The image is soft, contemplative, and cozy.

Photograph. We are looking down the aisle of a library. On one hand is the wooden balustrade; on the other side are rows of old encyclopaedias and folios, all in tasteful set. The aisle stretches down towards a reading room filled with more shelves, its dome curving gracefully overhead. All is suffused in sepia and cream.

Photograph in a home, of a centrepiece on a wooden dinner table. Earth-coloured tartan placemats, handcrafted fabric maple leaves, pime cones, creamy taper candles in glassss and ceramic candleholders... This centrepiece, coupled with the brown wood of the table, a wooden cupboard, and plants standing before the glass sliding doors in the background, all give a homely, hospitable air in anticipation of the American Thanksgiving.

On a dresser, old books stand in a neat row, flanked on the right by two column candles, on the left by two candelabra, all lit with warm flames. In front of that shelf lies an open book, as if the reader had put it down and left it there, forgotten. A mirror behind the dresser shows a window screened by gauzy curtains. Though the scene is brightly lit, the dresser is dark, the candles are warm, and all looks cozy and inviting.

Photograph. A white-robed monk, hood covering his head, enters the door of La Grande Chartreux. He is dwarfed by the splendour of the architecture.
